Most professionals spend the work day on their desks sitting in front of their computer. This increased now that we have shifted to virtual and hybrid work arrangements.
Sitting too much has been identified as an "independent risk factor for chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer, and type 2 diabetes."
In pre-COVID times, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and leaders of all level encouraged walking meetings. This was especially praised in the tech industry where employees took advantage of their beautiful campuses while engaging in creative thinking with their colleagues.
But even for people working virtually, we can take advantage of walking meetings:
Set alerts and alarms so you can be prompted to stand periodically, ideally every 30 minutes.
Stand while working - standing desks are cool, but not required. The next time you find that you have to brainstorm or think deeply, try to stand and walk around. Stanford researchers saw that people the 60% increase in creative output while walking applies even for people indoors.
On your next meeting that doesn't require slides or online tools, try to suggest having a standing or walking meeting. It may look funny but you're all getting work done while staying healthy!
