On my second year studying Psychology in undergrad, I chanced upon the message of Elizha Corpus Consulting's intern, Aimary. She was my President in my home org and she basically said that her boss was looking for someone to help them out in Work As One — ECC's month long celebration and campaign towards Diversity & Inclusion in the workplace. So, I applied. I didn't think much of it – besides, I've always wanted to dip my toes into the corporate, HR world because it always intrigued me. I was also looking for something outside of school and work to put my efforts into.
I didn't realize that that simple message would begin such a beautiful journey that I would look back to fondly.
My journey in ECC had the best beginning — I got to make recaps of all the webinars in Work As One. Imagine being able to attend all these value-adding webinars and workshops for free! From being a better ally for marginalized communities, to questioning beauty standards in the workplace, to advocating for mental health on such a grueling corporate world, I've learned so much in a span of a month. What's great is that I would have never learned these if I had not taken the chance to work in ECC.
What followed after was months of great team work, abundant learning, and wonderful self-growth. I joined the ECC team officially as an Learning Content Creator Intern and I was teamed up with amazing and talented people. In a span of 7 months, we were able to create 2 on-demand courses that honestly deserve to be seen by everyone in the world because of how impactful they can be. First was all about navigating one's career, especially made for newbies in the workforce or even those who still feel lost in their journey. I thought, this is exactly what I needed! And so as I edited the dozens of videos, I was keenly taking notes of whatever was shared. Not only was I able to produce such a meaningful course, but I was able to learn in the process.
The second one was all about stress management. It came right in the middle of me stressing so much about many things: school, career, orgs, friends, you name it. It was perfect timing — with every snip of a video and animation of a title, I listened to every lesson imparted about managing stress.
On top of being able to enhance my skills in content creation, Elizha even let me co-moderate a learning session about my own suggestion of a topic about using pronouns in the workplace for Pride month. It was amazing because I got to take part in every step of the process – from ideating down to moderating the event!
To cap it off, I honestly was not expecting much about what I had to learn from the experience. Again, as I said, I didn't think much of it and it was mostly curiosity pulling me to join the team.
But, looking back at my stay in ECC, I realized how much of a pleasant surprise it was. As I came in expecting to work, I was indulged with so many lessons and takeaways. As I feared for a boss that would give me a hard time like that of corporate bosses I'd see in movies, I was given such a caring and compassionate one. As I thought that I'd leave my job empty handed, I am bringing with me tons of learnings that I would take with me wherever I go.
What I appreciate most about my experience, on top of everything I learned, is being able to contribute to bringing humanity into the fast-paced, all-too-rigid corporate world. I realized that small efforts to change mindsets and cultures bring forth big and amazing things.
